Our Approach
Music begins in families and flourishes in friendships and community.
At The Artful Musician, we believe every person is born inherently musical. From the first songs shared in a parent’s arms, through the joyful discovery of the language of music, to singing in choir, studying an instrument, and making music throughout adulthood, we seek to nurture that gift through joyful experiences, beautiful music, meaningful relationships, and a lifelong love of learning.
Our approach is guided by this simple conviction:
Music doesn’t come from the instrument. It comes from the musician.
The principles below guide every class, every rehearsal, and every musical experience at The Artful Musician. Together, they create an environment where the inherent musicality within each student can grow, deepen, and enrich their lives for years to come.
Music Begins in Families
Families are a child’s first and most important place of learning, love, and growth.
Music has a unique way of bringing families together. Through singing, playing, moving, and sharing joyful musical experiences, parents and children create lasting memories while strengthening the relationships that matter most. These moments of connection become much more than music lessons—they become part of a family’s story.
As those relationships grow, so does the child. Shared musical experiences nurture healthy human development from birth—emotionally, physically, cognitively, socially, and musically—laying a joyful foundation for a lifetime of music-making.
The Voice — Our First Instrument
Our voice is the first instrument we bring into the world, making it the natural place to begin our musical journey.
Our voice is a God-given gift, uniquely our own, and should be both celebrated and intentionally developed. As we learn to sing in tune, listen carefully, blend with others, and express music with our voices, we develop musicianship that becomes the foundation for every other musical endeavor. These skills don’t stay with singing alone—they enrich ensemble performance, music reading, creativity, instrumental study, and a lifetime of joyful music-making.
For this reason, singing, singing games, folksongs, and beautiful literature form the heart of our learning. As students develop strong musicianship through their voices, they gain the skills and understanding that can be confidently applied to any additional musical path they choose.
Beautiful Music Matters
“Let us take our children seriously! Everything else follows from this… only the best is good enough for a child.”
Because music has the power to move, inspire, comfort, heal, unite, and elevate us in ways that words alone often cannot, we believe children deserve to be surrounded by music of genuine artistic worth. Beautiful music reflects the human experience and speaks to the heart.
For this reason, we intentionally surround our students with music of enduring beauty—from treasured folk songs to masterworks that have inspired generations.
Music leaves an imprint on our souls.
Experience Before Explanation
Meaningful musical experiences first touch the heart, then prepare the mind to understand.
We believe understanding doesn’t begin with explanation—it begins with experience. Children best learn music by joyfully singing, moving, listening, creating, and playing before symbols and notation are introduced.
Discovery brings learning to life, turning curiosity into understanding and confidence.
Children Delight in Meaningful Accomplishment
Joy and challenge are partners in learning.
Children naturally enjoy learning when they are invited to stretch, discover, and succeed. Meaningful musical challenges build confidence, inspire perseverance, and make each accomplishment more rewarding.
Music Flourishes in Community
Music gives us a place to belong.
Music brings families together, strengthens traditions, preserves heritage, connects generations, and helps communities express their stories and values. As students share their gifts, they discover music’s remarkable power to connect, encourage, uplift, and unite people.
Music Enriches Every Season of Life
At The Artful Musician, our goal is not simply to teach music—it is to help students develop a lifelong relationship with music.
Whether they continue singing in choirs, playing an instrument, leading music in their homes, worshipping through song, or simply finding joy in listening, we hope music becomes a lasting source of beauty, comfort, connection, and personal expression.
We believe musical growth is a lifelong journey. There is always something new to discover, another skill to develop, another song to learn, and another way to experience the beauty of music. From young children discovering their first songs to adults continuing their musical education, we believe it is never too early—or too late—to grow as a musician.
