Rebecca McLaughlin

Helping children, families, and lifelong learners discover the joy of making music together.

My Story

Some of my earliest memories are of sitting on the couch beside the piano in our family home. I was the eighth of nine children, and by the time I was five years old, my older sister, Lynette, was attending college as a music major. Every evening she practiced the piano, and I would sit quietly beside her, captivated. While other children may have dreamed of becoming astronauts or athletes, I remember wishing I could skip straight to college and become a music major so I could study music all day long.

Music was part of our family’s everyday life. My mother loved music and encouraged each of us to develop our musical gifts. Looking back, I realize those experiences shaped far more than my musical abilities. They taught me that music has the power to strengthen families, create lasting memories, and become part of who we are.

Years later, discovering the Kodály approach gave words and structure to what I had always sensed. Music is learned most naturally through joyful experiences, beautiful literature, singing, and active music-making. More importantly, it affirmed something I now believe with all my heart: every person is born inherently musical, and that gift can be nurtured throughout a lifetime.

Those early experiences, combined with years of teaching, learning, and continued study, eventually grew into The Artful Musician—a place where children, families, and adults can discover not only musical skills, but a lifelong love of music that enriches every season of life.

A Little About Me

My greatest joy is being a wife and mother. My husband, David, and I are the parents of four wonderful young men, and some of my happiest moments are simply spending time together as a family. Many of the values that shape my teaching—love, patience, curiosity, and encouragement—have been learned just as much at home as in the classroom.

I have always been endlessly curious. I love learning, creating, and discovering connections between ideas. Whether I’m studying folk songs from another culture, developing new curriculum, reading a great story, researching family history, attending the theater, creating arts and crafts, serving in my church callings, or enjoying a picnic in one of Utah’s beautiful canyons, I’m happiest when I’m learning something new, creating something meaningful, or sharing those discoveries with the people I love.

Students quickly discover that although I may seem a little reserved at first, I love to laugh, ask questions, celebrate discoveries, and occasionally subject everyone to a good (or wonderfully terrible!) mom joke.

I love asking questions, discovering connections, and learning alongside my students. One of my greatest joys is helping people discover that they are more musical than they ever imagined. Watching children, teens, adults, and families experience those moments of growth and discovery never gets old.

Why I Teach

The greatest joy of teaching isn’t watching students perform perfectly. It’s watching them discover they are capable of more than they ever imagined. Those moments of confidence, wonder, and accomplishment are what keep me excited to walk into the classroom every day.

I’d Love to Welcome You

Whether you’re introducing your child to music for the first time, looking for a place where your family can grow together through music, or rediscovering your own musical journey as an adult, I’d love to welcome you to The Artful Musician.

My hope is that every student who walks through our doors leaves not only with stronger musical skills, but with greater confidence, lasting friendships, beautiful memories, and a lifelong love of music. I hope you’ll come make music with us.
