Becoming a Musician

Developing confident musicians through joyful music-making.

Imagine your child growing into a musician who doesn’t simply perform music, but truly understands it. Through joyful singing games, playful musical challenges, music literacy, cultural enrichment, and meaningful musical experiences, students develop the understanding, creativity, confidence, and musicianship that equip them with a strong foundation for a lifetime of joyful music making.

Our sequential musicianship pathway is built upon joyful singing because the voice is every child’s first and most natural instrument. From that foundation, students develop the ability to hear, understand, read, write, create, and express music with increasing confidence and artistry. Each level expands upon the last, opening new opportunities for discovery while reminding students that there is always more to explore and enjoy.

Every Musical Experience Builds Upon the Last

Every joyful musical experience invites students to connect emotionally with the beauty of music, discover its elements, experiment by applying those elements to familiar and new songs, refine their musical expression, and eventually perform with increasing confidence and independence.

The Journey of Musical Growth: experience, connect, discover, experiment, express, perform independently — then new meaningful musical experiences begin the cycle again.

What Does a Music Class Look Like?

Every class at The Artful Musician is filled with joyful, active musical experiences designed to help students develop lasting musicianship. Through singing games, movement, creative exploration, guided listening, and meaningful musical challenges, students discover that learning music is both deeply rewarding and incredibly fun. Every activity is thoughtfully chosen and carefully adapted to meet students where they are, growing naturally with their age, abilities, and musical understanding while inspiring curiosity, confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.

The Building Blocks of Becoming a Musician

Every joyful musical experience contributes to a child’s growing musicianship. Together, these experiences nurture not only musical skills, but also curiosity, creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love of music.

Joyful Singing Games

Singing games are at the heart of every Artful Musician class. Through playful interaction, students experience the elements of music long before they are asked to name, analyze, or read them. As they sing, move, laugh, cooperate, and solve musical challenges together, they build a rich foundation of musical understanding while creating joyful memories and meaningful friendships. Behind every joyful singing game is a carefully designed musical experience. What feels like play to students is actually laying the foundation for a lifetime of musical understanding.

Feeling Music — Movement

Music is meant to be experienced with the whole body. Through creative movement, circle games, partner activities, and expressive responses to beautiful music, students learn to feel steady beat, rhythm, musical form, phrasing, and expression long before they encounter those ideas on the written page. Whether moving to a beloved folk song or responding to the music of the great composers, students experience music as something living, expressive, and deeply meaningful. Movement brings music to life, helping students develop coordination, confidence, and a deep physical connection to the music they create together.

Experiencing Rhythm

Rhythm is meant to be felt before it is read. Through rhythmic chants, body percussion, rhythmic instruments, movement, singing games, and creative musical experiences, students develop an internal sense of steady beat, rhythm, and meter that becomes the foundation for confident music making. As students explore, identify, practice, and perform rhythm in joyful and meaningful ways, they develop the confidence to read, write, create, and express increasingly complex rhythmic ideas with understanding, creativity, and independence.

Understanding Melody

Melody brings music to life. Through joyful singing, solfa, hand signs, melodic games, and playful musical exploration, students learn to hear, see, and feel the relationships between pitches, developing accurate intonation and building a musical understanding that naturally prepares them to read, write, perform, and create melodies with confidence.

Reading & Writing the Language of Music

Music literacy means “seeing what we hear and hearing what we see.” As students build musical understanding through joyful musical experiences, the symbols on the page begin to represent sounds they already know and understand. Learning to read and write both rhythm and melody gives students the freedom to explore new music independently, communicate musical ideas clearly, and continue growing as confident, lifelong musicians.

Discovering Great Music

Beautiful music has the power to inspire, uplift, and remain with us throughout our lives. Through expressive listening, singing, movement, discussion, and the discovery of rich musical literature, students become personally acquainted with the music of the world’s great composers, treasured folk traditions, and diverse musical cultures. As their musical understanding grows, they begin to recognize deeper layers of beauty, craftsmanship, and expression, creating meaningful musical memories and a lifelong appreciation for the richness and diversity of the world’s musical heritage.

Creating Music

Creativity grows naturally from musical understanding. Through improvisation, composition, arranging, and making thoughtful musical choices, students explore the endless possibilities of musical expression, discovering that music is something they can create as well as perform. Inspired by the rich musical literature they have come to know and love, students discover the joy of expressing their own musical ideas with confidence, imagination, and growing independence.

Discovering Music Around the World

Music is one of the world’s most beautiful ways of understanding people and cultures. Through songs, singing games, dances, celebrations, traditions, and musical experiences from around the world, students discover that every culture has something meaningful to teach us. As they experience diverse musical traditions, students develop greater curiosity, respect, and appreciation for the people, histories, and cultures that have shaped our world’s rich musical heritage.

Sharing Music Together

Music is meant to be shared. Through ensemble singing, collaborative music making, performances, and joyful celebrations, students discover the power of creating something beautiful together. As they grow in confidence and musicianship, they learn that sharing music is one of the most meaningful ways to encourage, uplift, and bring joy to others.
